FUN IN THE SUN: Revellers enjoying the attractions at a previous Liquorice Festival. P9930u529
SWEET-toothed groups are invited to line up for a tasty treat by joining Pontefract Liquorice Festival's spectacular parade.
The festival – which lasted nine days last year – was cut back to a weekend after major funding was lost but sponsors have rallied to make sure it takes place on Saturday and Sunday July 12-13.

Organisers at Pontefract Liquorice Trust and parade co-ordinator Wakefield’s Faceless Street and Community Arts are now urging people to join the fun.

Charlie Wells, Faceless community engagement manager, said: “We’re encouraging any community or youth group, club or school in Pontefract to sign up for the parade.

“It is the festival’s highlight for everyone as it brings the town together at the very start of festivities.

“We want Pontefract people to become involved in the very heart of the festival – it’s also a good way for groups to raise awareness.”

Workshops to create hats, flags and other parade accessories are also being organised by Faceless.

The popular festival, which attracted 20,000 visitors last year, will include an action day at Pontefract Castle with medieval re-enactments and entertainment on the Saturday.

Sunday July 13 is National Liquorice Day and begins with the parade, followed by street performers, live music, dancing, and crafts in the town centre.

Liquorice talks, foods, exhibitions and children’s activities will also be on offer.

Anbody interested in joining the parade should contact Mr Wells on 01924 335985 or email Charlie@facelessco.com.

l Pontefract Heritage Group is organising the action day at Pontefract Castle.

Entry will cost £1 for adults and 50p for children.
